Son Heung-min of Germany's Bayer Leverkusen will not play for his home country, South Korea, during the upcoming Asian Games, the nation's football governing body said Wednesday.

The Korea Football Association (KFA) said it was notified by Leverkusen in the German Bundesliga that it could not make Son, a South Korean football star, available for the Asian Games as the Asian Games football matches are not on the official FIFA calendar.

The KFA asked Leverkusen to release the 22-year-old for the Games to be held in Incheon, west of Seoul, from Sept. 19 to Oct. 4.

A striker, Son scored in a 4–2 defeat to Algeria in his team’s second Group H preliminary round match of the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil.
