FC Barcelona's Lionel Messi set a new goalscoring record of 74 goals in the UEFA Champions League, Tuesday (local time).

The goals Messi has scored so far in Europe's top club competition are three and four more than former Real Madrid's player Raul Gonzalez's record of 71 goals and Real Madrid's Cristiano Ronaldo's 70 goals in the league, respectively. Gonzalez now plays for North American Soccer League club New York Cosmos.

Messi got the record, by scoring a hat-trick in his side's 4-0 victory over APOEL during a Champions League Group F soccer match at GSP stadium, in Nicosia, Cyprus. He scored his side's second goal in the 38th minute, third goal in the 58th minute and third goal in the 87th minute.
