Kia's Soul EV best-selling electric car in home market

Kia Motors' Soul EV compact was the best-selling electric car in its home market, South Korea, in 2014, industry data showed Monday.

The Soul EV sold 414 units, or 35 percent of the total 1,183 electric vehicles sold in the country last year, according to the data compiled by the Korea Automobile Manufacturers Association (KAMA). 

Renault Samsung's SM3 Z.E came in second with 309 units, or 26.1 percent of the total, followed by Kia Motors' Ray EV (202 units, or 17.1 percent), BMW i3 (170 vehicles, or 14.4 percent) and GM Korea's Chevrolet Spark (70 units, or 5.9 percent).

KAMA officials said that the Soul EV gained popularity among South Korean customers as its fully charged battery has a 148-kilometer driving range, compared with 135km for SM3 Z.E and 132km for BMW i3.

Meanwhile, sales of electric vehicles in the South Korean auto market jumped 65.5 percent to 1,183 units in 2014 from a year earlier, the KAMA said.
