Who is the fastest footballer in the world?

Real Madrid's midfielder Gareth Bale is the fastest footballer in the world, a Spanish sports newspaper said Tuesday.

The 36.9km per hour sprint set by Bale was the fastest ever recorded by a footballer, the newspaper, AS, said on its English website, citing the results of research conducted by Mexican football club Pachuca and certified by FIFA, the world's football governing body.  

Pachuca's winger Jurgen Damm places second with 35.23km per hour, followed by Manchester United's midfielder Antonio Valencia (35.1km), Tottenham's midfielder Aaron Lennon (33.8km) and Real Madrid's forward Cristiano Ronaldo (33.6km), according to the newspaper.  

Attacker Lionel Messi of FC Barcelona is ranked seventh with 32.5km, after forward Theo Walcott of Arsenal FC (32.7km), it said.

Also joining the ranks of the top 10 are Manchester United forward Wayne Rooney (31.2km), Bayern Munich's midfielder Franck Ribery (30.7km) and Real Madrid's defender Sergio Ramos (30.6km).
