Suh Kyung-bae, chairman of Amore Pacific Group, South Korea's largest cosmetic and beauty product maker, became the second richest man in South Korea, outpacing Lee Jay-yong, vice chairman of Samsung Electronics and heir apparent to its parent Samsung Group, a U.S. media firm said.

Suh, with assets worth US$8 billion, placed 163th in the list of the world's 200 wealthiest people released by Bloomberg Tuesday (local time), ahead of Lee who was ranked 183rd with assets estimated at $7.5 billion.

Lee's father, Lee Kun-hee, who is chairman of Samsung Electronics and de facto head of the conglomerate, remained the country's richest individual with assets worth $12.8 billion, ranking 85th.

Amore Pacific Chairman Suh joined the ranks of the top 200 for the first time in November last year, and had since then been the third richest man in South Korea.

The price of Amore Pacific stocks has surged more than 50 percent since last last year on the back of robust sales of its products in China.

Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates retained his No. 1 spot with assets worth $83.6 billion, followed by Warren Buffett, chairman of Berkshire Hathaway Inc. ($71.1 billion) and Mexico's Carlos Slim, chairman and chief executive of telecommunications companies Telmex and American Movil, ($68.4 billion).
