The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) on Monday launched a preliminary emergency appeal to support the Nepal Red Cross Society deliver assistance to 75,000 people affected by a major earthquake.

The US$ 35.1 million appeal will allow IFRC to provide critical, life-saving support, such as emergency shelter and basic household items, emergency health and care including psychosocial support, livelihoods support and restoring family links services.

As of Monday evening, a total of 3,904 people had been killed and about 7,180 others injured in the powerful earthquake that struck Nepal at midday Saturday, said the country's home ministry.

The 7.9-magnitude quake jolted central, western, mid-western and far-western parts of Nepal, which was followed by at least 15 strong aftershocks, with the last one of 6.7 magnitude occurred on Sunday afternoon.

Both the death toll and the level of humanitarian needs will climb as new areas are accessed and more information becomes available.
