KakaoTalk, South Korea's largest mobile messenger, is the world's most frequently used app, a U.S.-based venture capital firm reported Wednesday (local time).

KakaoTalk topped the "Top Apps by Number of Sessions" list released by Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers, with the number of sessions per user hitting 55.

WhatsApp, a smartphone messenger run by Facebook Inc. came in second with 37 sessions, while China's WeChat and VK, the largest Russian social network in Europe, were tied for third place with 29.

The report was based on a study on apps of 75 million Android users in 150 countries conducted by Quettra, a U.S. mobile analytics startup, in the first quarter of this year.

LINE, a mobile messenger in Asia operated by the Japanese subsidiary of South Korea's No. 1 portal Naver Corp., placed fifth with 26 sessions per user, whereas Facebook and Viber developed by Viber Media tied for sixth place with 20.

Also joining the ranks of the top 10 were Clash of Clans (16), Instagram (12) and Messenger (8).
