More than a thousand world scientists and researchers, including Stephen Hawking, have co-signed an open letter to ban so-called “killer robots,” according to media reports on Wednesday.

In the open letter presented at the International Joint Conference on Artificial Intelligence in Buenos Aries, the signatories warned that a military artificial intelligence arms race could soon develop, if preventative measures are not taken.

The letter cautioned: "Starting a military AI arms race is a bad idea, and should be prevented by a ban on offensive autonomous weapons beyond meaningful human control."

Autonomous weapons have been described as the third revolution in warfare, after gunpowder and nuclear arms.
