South Korean farmers hold packs of rice in their hands during an event to mark the first Rice Day at the Korea House in Jung-gu, central Seoul, Tuesday. The Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs designated Aug. 18 as the Rice Day, as part of efforts to promote the consumption of rice, the key staple grain in the country. The nation's per-capita consumption of rice stood at 178.2 grams a day in 2014, a decrease of 5.8 grams or 3.2 percent from the previous year, according to government data. The figure more than halves a record high of 373.7 grams set in 1970.
