Passengers who travel from Malta International Airport could have their hand luggage and electronic devices checked for traces of explosive material using specialized detection technology.

The airport, the archipelago's only aeronautic gateway, has invested in the technology to improve the security screening procedure in compliance with newly enacted EU regulations.

"Ongoing structural works at the central security screening area, as well as the new equipment installed, are intended to make sure this procedure meets the new regulatory demands set out by the EU," said the airport’s head of security Patrick Murgo.

In addition, the airport has also invested other resources and high-service orientation training for existing employees to enable this process to be executed as efficiently as possible.
