S. Korean action thriller 'The Phone' tops local box office on opening day

South Korean action thriller "The Phone" topped the local box office on its opening day Thursday, outpacing Hollywood sci-fi epic "The Martian," data showed Friday.

"Phone" starring actors Son Hyun-joo and Bae Sung-woo and actress Uhm Ji-won drew 97,239 viewers, compared with 64,383 for "Martian." according to the data compiled by an integrated ticket sales computer network. 

However, "Martian" had a big lead over "Phone" in pre-sale tickets for the weekend (between Friday and Sunday). The blockbuster accounted for 30 percent of the total pre-sale tickets sold nationwide as of 10 a.m. Friday, higher than 19 percent for the action thriller, the data said.
 
Since its release in the country on Oct. 8, "Martian" starring Matt Damon has attracted more than 3.4 million moviegoers in South Korea's box office.
