The Apple Watch dominated again the global smartwatch market in the third quarter of this year, a U.S. market researcher said.

The Apple Inc. wearable accounted for 73.8 percent, or 4.5 million units of the world's smartwatch shipments during the July-September period, according to Strategy Analytics (SA).

Samsung Electronics ranked a distant second with a 9.8 percent market share, or 600,000 units. However, Samsung is "poised for more meaningful growth when the Gear S2 ships in larger volumes in the Q4 holiday season," SA said. The Gear S2, Samsung's latest smartwatch, went on sale on its home turf, South Korea, on Oct. 2.

Huawei. Lenovo and other vendors had a combined 16.4 percent, or 1 million units of the market.

Global smartwatch shipments grew a healthy 510 percent to a record 6.1 million units in the third quarter from 1 million units a year earlier, it said.
