A Mountain View Police Department (MVPD) officer pulled over a vehicle on Thursday, in Mountain View, California, because it was driving too slow and may cause traffic accidents. But in the driver’s seat where the driver should have been, there was no one. The vehicle was Google’s self-driving car.

The MVPD recalls the incident. MVPD talked about the happening on their blog. An officer noticed traffic backing up a slow moving car. The car was moving at a speed of approximately 38km/h. When the officer approached the vehicle, he found out it was Google’s unmanned vehicle with its operator sitting in the passenger seat.

Google also talked about the incident on Google Self-Driving Car Project blog. Google, capped the speed of their unmanned vehicles down to 38km/h for safety reasons. “We want them to feel friendly and approachable, rather than zooming scarily through neighborhood streets,” Google said,

However, the vehicle with ghost driver didn’t get fined for slow driving. According to MVPD, Google’s car was driving under the speed limit, so it was not subjected to any fines.
