Microsoft announced retirement of its music service “Zune”, Sunday.

Zune, a service which supports Zune devices since its first model launched in 2006, was shut down on Sunday. Its music download and streaming service will no longer be supported. The users can use the Zune player device as usual but won’t be able to download any new music and contents into it since Digital Rights Managed (DRM) fails to renew.

However, If a user wishes to keep his music subscription, which came with an incentive of ten free songs a month, the service will be converted to the Groove Music Pass, Microsoft’s music streaming service for online and mobile devices.

Zune player device was thought to be the rival of Apple’s iPod, but the sales gap was too large for a comparison. Microsoft decided that focusing on making Windows Phone is better than to focus on Zune, The device was out of production in 2011.

The Groove Music will take Zune’s place and continue to keep its legacy. Groove Music is available in iOS, Android, PC, XBOX and Windows Phone.
