In an address to a joint session of parliament, Francois Hollande, the President of France said on Monday, “France is at war.” It has been just a few days after terrorist attacks in Paris, which left at least 129 people dead and more than 300 people wounded.
The president vowed to “merciless” response to any kind of threats. Mr. Hollande announced that there will be an increase in police recruitment and constitutional amendment will be made to support the fight against terrorism.
Mr. Hollande stated that he is to meet US president Barrack Obama in Washington and Russian president Vladimir Putin in Moscow in coming days to discuss on the union of forces which, aims to attack terrorist groups.
“We will eradicate terrorism,” The president said at the end of a 50-minute long speech, the whole parliament stood up to sing the French national anthem “Marseillaise” in ovation.
France already launched an attack on IS stronghold Sunday. Ten fighter jets of joint forces with U.S, bombed IS bastion in Syria, destroying its training center and munitions depot. Also France’s only aircraft carrier, Charles De Gaulle is headed to the Middle East to join forces with U.S to fight against Islamic State (IS, formerly Isis), who claimed responsibility for the attacks in Paris.
The attacks Friday were coordinated and carried out brutally. Six places were attacked, including a crowded concert hall, sports stadium and street full of cafes with people enjoying their Friday evening.
