Hyundai Motor Group launched a project called “Going Home”, a heart-warming Virtual Reality service for Internally Displaced People (IDP), who long to visit their homes in the northern parts of Korea.

According to Hyundai Motor Group’s official blog, Friday, the Going Home service was specially prepared for the IDP. There are approximately eight million IDP counting people of the second and the third generation. Many had to leave their homes in desperate action to move to safety during the Korean War.

Mr. Kim Gu-hyun (born in 1927), the first generation of IDP chosen among the applicants submitted in last August, finally got to see his old home he dreamt of.

To depict his old home, series of interviews were taken about Mr. Kim’s hometown, his house and other important information to make the trip realistic. After much designing and engineering done, the screen was set up at Imjingak, a park located on the banks of Imjin River, on the border of South and North Korea.

A Genesis sedan arrived at Imjingak with Mr. Kim onboard on November 5. The car was parked in from of a VR screen 28.2 meters wide, six meters tall. After setting the navigation to his old address, the 3D image inside the screen played a film which the car moved through Gaesung, Pyongyang and to Pyunganbukdo province where Mr. Kim’s house was located.

Mr. Kim was full of joy and wonder as the car in screen moved to his house reborn in delicate 3D graphics. When his old house was displayed in the screen, he cried “Mother! I am home, Mother!”
