Amazon announced new design of its delivery drones (or unmanned aerial vehicle). Unlike its quad-copter styled prototype, the new design is hybrid. Bigger, and more efficient.

The new drone was designed to be more efficient. “This design enables it to fly long distances efficiently and go straight up and down in a safe, agile way. It is one of many prototype vehicles we have developed,” an Amazon spokesperson told TechCrunch, an IT specialist news group. “One day, seeing Prime Air vehicles will be as normal as seeing mail trucks on the road.”

The drone delivery system was first announced by Amazon last 2013. Amazon’s CEO Jeff Bezos had said the drone will fly to customers to make delivery in 30 minutes. He expects to change the delivery system with more efficient, fast and safe ways.

Amazon did not announce the drone delivery services’ launch date. Before launching, the drone delivery system still has a long way to go.

Safety is one of the public’s concerns against the delivery system. Since there are mid air obstacles like birds, low hanging power lines and tree branches, which are very hard for the drones to detect, accidents could happen. Not to mention one of the drones getting sucked into a jet plane’s engine, this could lead to a disaster.

When Safety issues are covered, then Amazon would have to work within the regulations. Currently, countries including U.S., Korea and UK have regulations on flying a drone in some parts of the countries.
