Faced with a declining smartphone market share and operating margins, Samsung Group on Tuesday appointed a new mobile president at its flagship Samsung Electronics Co.

In its annual personnel appointments announcement, Samsung Group said Dongjin Koh will take over as president of the mobile communications business from J.K. Shin beginning next year.

Shin will not be involved in day-to-day smartphone business operations but remain head of the overall mobile division for Samsung and focus on long-term strategy and developing new growth businesses.

Koh, 54, previously head of Samsung's mobile research and development, played a key role in the development and launch of premium devices such as the Galaxy S6 and the Galaxy Note 5. He was also behind the development of the Samsung Pay mobile payments system.

Over the year, Samsung Electronics' smartphone market share or margin has been sliding in the face of competition from Apple Inc. in the premium market and Chinese companies in cheaper devices.
