Air pollution in Beijing kept its hazardous level for five straight days. The Chinese government kept students indoors and hospitals are filled with respiratory patients, most of them are young, who are more vulnerable to air pollution.

The smog engulfed the capital city of China. Streetlights were lit during the daytime because of low visibility and cars on the road also had the headlights on. People wore masks to protect themselves from smog.

According to a report by Associated Press, the readings of tiny poisonous PM2.5 particles reached high 600s micrograms per cubic meter. The World Health Organization considers safe level at 25 micrograms per cubic meter.

Thick brown smog with burning scent is the result of cold winter, the authorities said. As the weather got cold, households and factory facilities burning coal as fuel increased. The Health Ministry had announced that it had sent teams sent out to check illegal emissions.

Several cities surrounding Beijing were also reported with polluted air. Forecasters expect strong wind on Wednesday to blow away the smog.
