New chief prosecutor Kim Soo-nam vowed to take stern action on protestors. The announcement was made as he was sworn as South Korea’s new chief of prosecution.

Earlier in November, nearly a hundred thousand people gathered in the heart of Seoul City, Gwanghwamun, to protest against the government’s plan to adopt state published history textbooks and reform in labor market.

The rally later turned violent as some protestors tried to pull police buses which were blocking the streets out of the way. In the process, an old man was repeatedly shot with police water cannon as hospitalized. The incident brought angry responses from the public.

Mr. Kim’s vow was meant for a massive rally expected on the 5th of December. The authorities have warned civic groups and protestors of immediate and stern action will be taken against them when violent action is spotted during the rally straight after the protest. Later in November, The government took stronger posture by announcing anyone taking part in the rally will be arrested.

Despite the authorities’ warnings, a rally is expected to take place.

The chief prosecutor showed his concerns. “People think that acting by law will do no good for them. So they are trying to take matters into their own hands by force.” He said, “Mistrust on law leads to mistrust among the public which, weakens Korea. Also, it’s a big obstacle to becoming a leading country.”

He also added that the authorities will strengthen the law against protesters and thoroughly investigate violent protesters but also people who protect them. He claimed the process will break the endless cycle of illegal activities.

He ended his speech by quoting Lun Yu – The Analects of Confucius. “The gentleman is generous without its costing him anything, works others hard without their complaining, has desires without being greedy, is casual without being arrogant, and is awe-inspiring without appearing fierce.”

“To carry out a role of law prosecutor, you have to be strict, but with dignity. Also, modesty is required.” He explained.
