South Korea to lead U.N. Human Rights Council

South Korea was chosen to lead the United Nations (U.N.) Human Rights Council next year. The Foreign Ministry said on Tuesday that the effort to promote human rights around the globe was recognized by the U.N.

Being chosen to lead the Human Rights Council is the first time in South Korean history. Ambassador Choi Kyong-lim, South Korea’s permanent representative to the U.N.’s Geneva office will take a position of the President of the UN Human Rights Council.

Established in 2006, the Human Rights Council has 26 countries in union to act against human rights violation around the world. It established frameworks for standards and mechanisms to promote and protect human rights.

The ministry official said, “We are seen by the international community as a country that has made large achievements in democracy and expansion of human rights.”

South Korea will lead the Human Rights Council by overseeing and managing situation regarding human rights.
