The majority of devices used to connect to “Naver”, Korea’s most popular web portal site shifted from PCs to smartphones recently, and so did the advertisements. Mobile advertising is growing fast in Korean advertising industry despite the slogging pace of the nation’s economy.

According to Digieco, an economic research institute of mobile carrier KT, the amount of money spent in mobile advertising is estimated at KR\ 940 billion (U.S$ 789 million) this year. The money had risen nearly 1,800 times since the last research in 2010.

With over 60 percent of internet users using mobile devices, advertisers are desperate to find better ways to make more impressions of Ads. Of course, traditional mobile advertisements such as banners and pop-ups are still in the mainstream.

According to Kim Jae-hoon, CEO of mobile advertising specialist Vanes Inc., Ads which brought positive feedback from the users and advertisements are the ones with latest technology and trends combined.

GPS location service is combined with search results and social media to focus advertisement to a user more effectively or Bluetooth signal emitting beacons are located in various spots in a shop, notifying the customers with hot spot deals and sectional sales.

Mr. Kim expects the mobile advertising market will overtake the PC-online advertising market in near future. “Mobile Ads are more effective because it can blend in with any contents, anywhere, and anytime. As mobile device users increase, the mobile ads will eventually take over the PC-online Ads market.”
