The hottest of the trends in recent years is the drone. Small flying helicopter-like machines are used in various fields such as filming, security, and leisure. Now, South Korea’s number two mobile carrier “KT” is to start a whole new genre. Drone racing.

The race, scheduled to be held in the South Korean capital, Seoul, will be the first drone race in Korea.

“We prepared the race since our customers in their 20s and 30s who enjoy drone as a hobby are increasing,” said KT’s marketing division Vice President Shin Hoon-joo.

According to KT, the race will be called “Giga Racing” and it will be held at the “Garden Five” shopping mall located in Songpa District on December 27. 24 drone racers will compete for the total prize money of KR\ 20 million.

The mobile carrier had been showing great interest in drones and developing businesses related to it. KT had recently showcased a portable drone center which can be carried around on a rescue personnel’s back and is used to communicate with drones on work to find people in dire conditions out in the mountains or sea.
