Though the world movie industry is bustling with news of “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” (TFA), Korean box-office is not affected by the ‘force’. Korean film “Himalayas” is on top of the list.
The survival drama Himalayas earned U.S$ 10.1 million between its opening on Wednesday until Sunday. Drawing 1.53 million viewers. The film opened on 1,009 screens nationwide. TFA opened on Thursday with 940 screens earning $7.96 million from Thursday until Sunday. The film drew 1.07 million viewers and was ranked second in the box-office, the Korean Film Council’s KOBIS service announced.
“The Tiger”, which is another newcomer, did not quite do well on its first week. Making $4.83 million between Wednesday and Sunday.
According to a pop-culture critic, Kim Kyo-suk, Himalayas have every aspect which a Korean would love to see in a film. “Himalayas have great line up of starring actors who are all time favorites of Korean moviegoers,” He said.
“The plot hits the bull’s-eye in the heart of the viewers as the film starts light, with comical scenes and ends with the heart-warming humanitarian message.” Mr. Kim pointed out.
