Drunk driving kills over 700 a year

3,648 people died from drunk driving related accidents from 2010 until 2014. It’s an average of nearly 730 people killed every year, according to research results released by Korean Road Traffic Authority.

Hit and run accidents related to drunk driving in last five years were 15,741 cases. 30% of the total hit and run violations reported during the period. Police suspect that drunk drivers, in fear of punishment by law and fine, are more likely to make the situation worse by fleeing the scene where after being in an accident.

Cases of drunk driving accidents were more frequent on Saturdays (18.1%) and Sundays (16%). The numbers accounted more than one-thirds of total accidents related with drunk driving during the whole week.

Since drunk driving accidents hike in numbers at the end-of-year season due to meetings among friends and families are much more frequent, the government has launched a campaign to prevent drunk driving.

Also, police are on alert during the season, prompting that there will be series of concentrated crackdown on drunk driving all over the nation and violators will be sentenced accordingly.
