Apple has joined the rivals’ in the race of developing artificial intelligence (AI) technology by acquiring Emotient, a company which develops technology which uses AI to read a person’s facial expressions.

According to a report by Wall Street Journal on Friday, Emotient’s technology was originally developed from an idea which, a doctor uses to measure pain in patients who cannot talk. The company had previously raised U.S$ eight million including investment from Intel Capital.

Apple filed a patent on software in 2014, which picks up clues including facial expressions, to guess people’s mood and feelings. Experts believed that Apple plans to use this patent to provide right contents based on the users’ feelings.

However, Apple did not reveal much about the acquisition. The Wall Street Journal quoted Apple “buys smaller technology companies from time to time, and we generally do not discuss our purpose or plans.”
