South Koreans are coffee lovers. Koreans drink an average of 1.7 cups of coffee per day, but the types of coffee preferred differ by gender. While capsule coffee is mostly preferred by women, canned coffee is the favorite of the men.

According to a survey results from The Ministry of Health and Welfare and the Korea Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Korean people aged between 19 and 64 consume coffee more frequently than rice (0.93 times a day).

Approximately 66 percent of the people drink at least a cup of coffee a day, which included 24,4 percent who drink more than three cups. 22.9 replied that they drink an average of two cups a day, but only 12 percent said they do not drink coffee.

Another research showed that the types of coffee differ by gender. According to a survey results from Korea Broadcast Advertising Corporation, Korean men’s favorite type of coffee is canned coffee. For Korean women, capsule coffee or pod coffee are their favorites.

Song Eui-han, a coffee distributor, says the favorite types of coffee differ because of both genders’ basic personality. “Men prefer canned coffee because it’s more convenient and can be consumed anywhere, anytime. Taste of coffee does not really affect their choice on products as long as they do not taste terrible” Mr. Song said.

For female coffee lovers, it’s a little complicated. “Capsule coffee had been gaining popularity over the years,” Mr. Song explained. “Even though it needs a special machine to extract coffee and make a big sound when doing so, many consider that the taste is better than most of the coffee outlets provide.”

“Korean women focus on how the coffee tastes rather than how convenient and fast it is served.” Mr. Song pointed out.
