YouTube has officially returned to Pakistan with a localized version of the site this week. The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) banned the video streaming social media back in 2012, and the service was not available since.

"Google has provided an online web process through which requests for blocking access of the offending material can be made by PTA to Google directly and Google/YouTube will accordingly restrict access to the said offending material for users within Pakistan," PTA announced on Tuesday.

YouTube’s new localized service will provide service just like the rest of the world, but sensitive contents which may be offending to some users in Pakistan will be restricted of access. This service has already launched in Nepal and Sri Lanka. YouTube’s localized service also highlights media from local artists.

In 2012, an offensive anti-Muslim film “Innocence of Muslims” was posted on YouTube which caused the Pakistani government to force the social media out of the country. Now, PTA will have direct access to Google to deal with offensive contents.
