Instagram, a popular social network service added a new feature to its video service- video view count for user generated and advertisement videos on Thursday.
This feature originally added to Facebook, the company which owns Instagram, is a part of a project to strengthen video features on the photo centered social network. Small change as it seems, but it’s only a beginning of upcoming video related updates.
Both Facebook and Instagram are encouraging their users to upload video contents by adding new features to its services. Recently, Facebook had added live video streaming feature for its iOS app. Also, by adding video counts to its feed, users were more enthusiastic about sharing the video content.
Users getting used to having more and more video features in their social network service not only adds diversity to its user-generated contents but also benefits the company by being able to add video advertisement on the user’s video contents. Video advertisements are more expensive than static advertisements such as banners, links, etc.
Instagram will add each view count after a video content is played for three seconds. A Facebook video content has to take 50 percent or 100 percent on the screen to be counted, but Instagram had not yet decided on which percentage the count should be made.
