Samsung Electronics on Friday unveiled a mini module for the Internet of Things (IoT) technology that will be used widely by enterprises to speed up the development of IoT products.

The module, ARTIK, features an application processor, memory, sensors and a communications device to support high-end technologies such as security solutions and cloud computing services.

Samsung said the module would help accelerate the development of various IoT-related products and a new IoT ecosystem.

Samsung promised to operate a program that shares various technologies with developers using the module. It will be distributed globally through Digi-Key, the world's fifth largest electronic component distributor.

IoT is the network of physical objects—devices, vehicles, buildings and other items embedded with electronics, software, sensors and network connectivity that enables these objects to collect and exchange data.

It allows objects to be sensed and controlled remotely across existing network infrastructure, creating opportunities for more direct integration of the physical world into computer-based systems.
