South Korea's LG Chem said Monday it has secured a deal to supply electric vehicle (EV) batteries to Fiat Chrysler Automobiles' new minivans from late this year.

LG Chem said batteries produced by its US factory in Michigan would be used for the plug-in hybrid version of Chrysler Pacifica. The plant currently makes batteries for General Motors' Bolt and Ford Motor's Focus electric vehicles.

The new minivan, which can run up to 48 kilometers (29 miles) on electricity only, will be launched in late 2016.

The amount of the contract was not disclosed. LG Chem expects more orders under its technology cooperation with the Italian-American automaker.

LG Chem has completed construction of its new battery factory in Nanjing, China, to meet its booming demand for plug-in EVs. The Nanjing factory is capable of providing about 50,000 batteries for advanced EVs a year.

The company plans to build a fourth plant in Europe in an effort to complete a global supply chain.
