LG Electronics said Tuesday it would team up with Intel to develop and pilot 5G-based "telematics" technology providing traffic information to cars fast through mobile communication.

Telematics is a general term that refers to any device which merges telecommunications and informatics. It includes anything from GPS systems to navigation systems.

LG is a leading company in supplying telematics products based on 4G long-term evolution (LTE) technology.

The company said its 5G technology would allow cars and pedestrians to communicate without a delay, helping reduce the number of accidents. It can be applied in tracking stolen cars or long-distance maintenance

LG said 5G telematics delivers data more than 33 times faster than 4G LTE with latency expected to drop to about one tenth of current speeds. 5G's reduced latency is possible even when cars are travelling at high speeds. Software can be updated faster.
