Huawei, a Chinese smartphone manufacturer, has announced a strategic partnership with Leica to boost their smartphones’ filming ability to the max.

Number three brand in the world, Huawei promised in their press release on Thursday, that "both technology and photography brands combining their shared ethos in a long-term commitment to the art of craftsmanship ... to create a powerhouse in the reinvention of smartphone photography." The company also stated that the partnership with Leica will "span research and development, design, co-engineering, user experience, marketing and retail distribution."

Smartphone makers worldwide had been battling to improve their products’ camera features. Since performance specs are very much similar nowadays, it is their aim to attract consumers with better cameras.

But Leica, infamous for creating the best, and the most expensive cameras and lenses partnering with Huawei came as a shock to many IT fans. Some even worry that prices may skyrocket due to Leica’s reputation of its expensive products.

Experts of the industry see the partnership will strengthen Huawei’s marketing power over Asia. Also, it could open up new avenues to Leica. But however, whether Leica will provide lenses to Huawei or just help them in the process of designing and building smartphone cameras is not known.
