Film on Korean sex slaves tops box-office

It took 14 years to write, prepare, film and finish the editing of this movie “Spirits’ Homecoming” which opened on Wednesday, a film about Korean sex slaves who were kidnapped, and exploited by the Japanese during the Second World War. And the efforts of its makers are finally getting the credit. The film topped the Korean box-office for two days in a row since its opening.

According to the Korean Film Council, Sprits’ Homecoming had 128,981 viewers on its opening day and accumulating a total of 294,823 viewers on its second day of opening. The film about Korean sex slaves is the only film which surpassed “Deadpool”.

Spirits’ Homecoming depicts a tragic story about a 14-year-old girl from 1943. Jungmin, who Japanese army brutally pulled off from her family, finds herself in the middle of a battlefield along with other girls of her age.

The film originated from a painting “Burning Young Girls” created by Kang Il-chul, who was a sex slave herself. She drew the painting during a psychological treatment session. Director Cho Jung-rae created the movie upon testimonials from many survivors of horrific sex slavery during the war.
