Spirits’ Homecoming accumulates 1.7 million views

A film about Korean women forced to sex slavery by Japanese Army during the Second World War, “Spirits’ Homecoming” accumulated 1705,236 viewers on its opening week.

Spirits’ Homecoming which started screening on February 24, drew public attention and numbers of viewers are rising fast. The public attention was concentrated on March 1, “Samiljeol, Independence Movement Day”. According to the Korean Film Council, 421,544 people went to cinemas to watch the film.

Independence Movement Day is a national holiday which commemorates a peace rally movement against Japanese colonization on March 1, 1919.

The film directed by Cho Jung-rae depicts a tragic story about a 14-year-old girl from 1943. Jungmin, who Japanese army brutally pulled off from her family, finds herself in the middle of a battlefield along with other girls of her age.

The original idea of the film came from a painting “Burning Young Girls” painted by Kang Il-chul, who herself was forced to become a sex slave. She drew the painting during a psychological treatment session. Director Cho Jung-rae created the movie upon testimonials from many survivors of horrific sex slavery during the war.

The Korean Film Council predicts the Spirits’ Homecoming will soon draw more than 2 million viewers and more.
