Google announced a pilot program “Hands Free” payment system last year, and now it has gone live in certain stores in San Francisco as a test project. All the user has to do is say “I’ll pay with Google”.

Samsung Pay, and Apple Pay are the widely used mobile payment system in the world. Those payment methods- bringing up credit card information which is stored in smart devices- are easy, fast, and convenient. But the methods shared a common problem. The users had to hold the smartphones by hand to use it.

The conventional method of pulling out a smartphone to use a payment system may give the users freedom of having to ram about their everyday life with no wallet, but when both hands are in use, such as holding a baby, carrying bags in both hands, and other situations, it can be a bit tricky.

The way Google’s Hands Free payment works is simple. After installing the Hands Free app, all the user has to do is register the photo of the user and add credit card information which is linked to his or her Google account.

When the user enters a shop which supports the Hands Free payment, smartphone connects to the cahier’s point-of-sale (POS) system by Bluetooth LE and WIFI. After user prompts the cashier that the payment will be made with Google, cashier confirms the user’s identity with the photo shown on POS and payment is complete.

Hands Free payment method is simple, but very secure. Users do not have to worry about their credit card information stored on their smartphones getting hacked or leaked, because the payment is confirmed by checking who the user is by comparing the photo and the person on the spot.

Google had not yet mentioned how the company is planning to expand its services, but the new simple payment method is drawing a lot of attention.
