A 19-year-old Chinese man sold his daughter to buy an iPhone and a motorbike, but he has given himself up to the authorities.

According to Epoch Times’ report, a man named A Duan sold his 18-day-old daughter to a stranger a year ago. Epoch Times reported that A Duan met the stranger on a Chinese chatting site “QQ”. The events took place in the city of Tong’an, located in the eastern province of Fujian.

After bargaining, A Duan and the stranger agreed to make a transaction for a sum of 23,000 Yuan (US$ 3,520) and the stranger took the newborn saying he will take the baby to his sister.

Epoch Times wrote quoting a local newspaper Xiamen Daily, that the baby’s biological mother Xiao Mei was below the age of consent when she was conceived with the child and the couple were having financially bad times since A Duan, who had not completed his high school education, spent most of his time in internet surfing.

When arrested, Xiao Mei told the authority that she did not know it was illegal to sell a baby. “I myself was adopted,” she said, “and many people in my hometown send their kids to other people to raise them. I really did not know it was illegal.”

Considering the couple’s difficult circumstances, the judge reduced their penalties. A Duan will serve a three-year prison sentence while Xiao Mei was given a suspended sentence of two and a half years.

The stranger who took the baby also turned up after A Duan and Xiao Mei was arrested, because the baby’s parents are under no condition to provide proper care, the stranger’s sister is looking after the baby.
