Hotspurs winger Son Heung-min was left out of South Korea's 23-man World Cup squad announced Monday by coach Uli Stielike as the 23-year-old wants to play for Olympic matches.

The Olympic football tournament is open to players under 23 but each nation can bring in three players over the limit as wild cards. Son, who will turn 24 in July, has expressed his desire to join South Korea's Olympic team.

The Korea Football Association has asked Tottenham to release Son for the Olympics in Brazil as a wild card, Stielike said, adding Son would not be called up for World Cup team matches in March.

South Korea have already secured the top spot in Group G with two matches left in the second Asian qualifying round for 2018 World Cup.

On March 24, South Korea will host Lebanon, before visiting Bangkok for a friendly on March 27 as a substitute for the postponed World Cup qualifying match with Kuwait.
