Google's artificial intelligence program AlphaGo beat South Korean Go master Lee Sedol in their final game Tuesday to close a landmark one-million-dollar tournament with a comfortable 4-1 win.

Lee, one of the world's best players, resigned in 280 moves iIn their final five-hour showdown in Seoul. AlphaGo, developed by Google's artificial intelligence (AL) team DeepMind,  has already clinched the prize money after winning three straight games.

AlphaGo also received the highest honorary Go ranking for promoting the ancient Chinese board game across the world. The Korea Baduk (Go) Association said
AlphaGo was made the honorary ninth-dan professional player.

"Dan" refers to a player's class or ranking. This is the first time that a player will be given an honorary professional dan from the association.

The association said AlphaGo has already proven its prowess by beating Sedol in the Go series, which has become a stunning global debut for a new style of "intuitive" AI.

Scientists say AI still has a long way to go before it can truly match the ingenuity of the human mind. But AlphaGo's overwhelming victory over Lee shocked the world, with social media users coming up with an endless array of parodies of the man-made, self-evolving machine.

AlphaGo's creators say their aim is to develop technology that can be implemented in health care, smartphone technology and robotics.
