Microsoft announced on Monday that the company would let game developers to create cross-platform multiplayer games which its gamers can play by side, or compete against each other regardless of what console platform they play on.

Multiplayer games are the popular genre in the gaming industry. But the only problem it has is, that the gamers using different kind of platforms- such as PC, Xbox, PlayStation, can only play multiplayer games with other gamers using the same platform.

Chris Charla, the Director of ID@Xbox, wrote on Xbox's official website "First, in addition to natively supporting cross-platform play between Xbox One and Windows 10 games that use Xbox Live, we’re enabling developers to support cross-network play as well. This means gamers on Xbox One and Windows 10 using Xbox Live will be able to play with gamers on different online multiplayer networks – including other console and PC networks."

Microsoft mentioned that the "Rocket League" will be one of the first games to support cross-platform between Xbox and Windows PC. The company hinted the cross-platforming could advance to Xbox-PlayStation support, even connecting all consoles and PCs.

But it is unclear for the developers on how to make the cross-platforming work, as different consoles mean different online framework, some serious converting may be required to make things happen.

Although multiplayer games were common among PC games, it was Xbox to bring the multiplayer games to consoles, but PlayStation 3, a late runner in console multiplayer games became the dominant one and kept the leading role ever since. Now, Some Xbox One gamers are complaining about lack of gamers to play with online, while PlayStation4 gamers have plenty.
