South Korean activists said Monday they launched propaganda balloons carrying some 100,000 leaflets that slammed North Korean leader Kim Jong-Un's dictatorship and his push for nuclear and missile programs.

Dozens of activists including North Korean defectors were involved in the leafleting exercise in a border town north of Seoul. They said five giant gas-filled balloons were used to send the leaflets across the heavily armed border.

It was the second balloon launch since they vowed to send a total of 10 million leaflets across the border over the next three years. The first launch was done on Saturday.

The exercise comes amid high cross-border tensions sparked by North Korea's nuclear and long-range rocket tests.

Pyongyang has repeatedly threatened to open fire at the sites for balloon launches.

On his website, Park Sang-hak, a defector-turned activist who has been on Pyongyang's hit list, said he would not succumb to North Korea's threats. He also accused Pyongyang of sending seven million leaflets into the South since a propaganda war intensified in mid-January.

In October 2014, North Korean troops opened fire in an attempt to shoot down a set of balloons, sparking a brief exchange of fire across the border.
