Helped by "Hallyu", exports of South Korean cosmetics have more than tripled in the past five years to hit a record high of 2.45 billion US dollars last year, official data showed Tuesday.

Exports of cosmetics surged from $698 million in 2011 to $2.45 billion last year, posting an annual average growth of 36.9 percent, according to the Korea Customs Service (KCS).

The volume of cosmetics exports jumped from 31,606 tons in 2011 to 90,491 tons in 2015.

Hallyu, the Korean pop culture wave, sparked the tremendous popularity of South Korean cosmetics in China and other Asian countries, the KCS said.

Last year exports of South Korean cosmetics to China stood at $999.5 million, or 40.6 percent of total shipments. Hong Kong was second with $606.4 million, followed by the United States with $207.3 million.
