Short track skaters under investigation for illegal gambling

Five South Korean short track speed skaters are under investigation on charges of illegal online sports gambling, police said on Thursday.

According to Gyeonggi Provincial Police Department's report, the authorities investigating the five short track speed skaters on the charges of regularly betting on sports games on illegal websites last year.

The authorities said that three of the skaters finished in the top eight in the second round of the short track speed skating national team qualification for 2016~2017 season. The qualification ended on Sunday. But the authorities did not give the names of the suspects.

The skaters are charged for placing bets up to KR\ 3 million (US$ 2,600) on illegal sports gambling website. The police said that they may expand the investigation to other skaters.

The Korea Skating Union (KSU) was quick to act on this matter and said that the union will punish the skaters if found guilty.

Except for "Sports Toto" lottery tickets, any other form of sports gambling is banned by the Korean government.
