South Korea's livestock community is still reeling under persistent outbreaks of the highly contagious foot-and-mouth disease, but Macau has lifted a ban on imports of Korean beef, the foreign ministry said Friday.

From Friday, the special administrative region on China's southern coast agreed on imports of South Korea's home-grown prime beef, the ministry said in a statement.

Macau is the second to lift a ban on South Korean beef after Hongkong, which took similar steps last December.

Many other countries still maintain a strict trade ban on South Korean beef because countries that report the animal disease are barred from exporting meat from all cloven-hoofed animals such as cattle, pigs, sheep, and goats.

South Korea is still struggling to contain the spread of the livestock disease which has affected pig farms so far this year.

Macau will import South Korean beef only from places which have not reported the disease for a year, the ministry said, adding South Korea's aggregate beef shipment to Hongkong and Macau may surpass two million US dollars this year.
