South Korea's top automaker Hyundai Motor forged a crucial partnership with US networking leader Cisco Systems Tuesday to develop technologies for connected cars, as part of its push for the early introduction of intelligent vehicles which provide remote maintenance services and autonomous driving.

Hyundai said the deal was signed when Cisco CEO Chuck Robbins visited Hyundai Motor vice chairman Chung Eui-sun in Seoul. The two companies agreed to cooperate in developing technology for a high-speed network which controls data transmission inside a car.

The technology is important in the development of connected cars equipped with Internet access, usually with a wireless network which allows the car to share internet access with other devices both inside and outside.

"A connected car ... will create a new and marvelous life we have never experienced," Chung said in a statement, adding the deal with Cisco would quicken the introduction of connected cars.

Connected cars are outfitted with special technologies that tap into the internet or wireless LAN and provide additional benefits to the driver such as automatic notification of crashes, notification of speeding and safety alerts.

Connected cars and electric cars are taking advantage of the rise of smartphones, and apps are available to interact with the car from any distance.
