LG Innotek announced Monday an under glass fingerprint module. With the new module, a user only has to place a finger on the cover glass of the smartphone to have it identified.

Fingerprint identifying modules have been widely used on smartphones from a few years ago. The older system required users to press a finger against a fingerprint module, which is usually located on the back or the front of the smartphone.

According to LG Innotek, the company achieved in creating the new under glass fingerprint module by cutting a shallow furrow of 0.3 millimeters thick on the lower backside of the cover glass and installed the fingerprint sensor inside it.

The company claims that since the fingerprint module is not exposed to the exterior of the smartphone, its creators can produce a sleek and smoothly designed smartphones. Also, designing a watertight phone is easier since high-strength glass cover protects the sensor and prevents it from coming in direct contact with water or from damages, LG Innotek said in an announcement.

LG Innotek expects that the demand for the fingerprint recognition technology will dramatically increase due to booming mobile payment market. Market research firm HIS reported that in 2015, approximately 499 million fingerprint sensors have been shipped globally and will increase to 1.6 billion in 2020.
