North Korea is trying to join an international push for the development of virtual reality, a cutting-edge consumer technology involving head-mounted displays which accurately track head movement and display 3D images, a US-based Internet media, reported.

A new science-technology complex has been built in North Korea with facilities for virtual reality, but it could still be in an early phase, NK News said, based on photos and an article carried by Pyongyang's monthly periodical DPRK Today.

Professor Park Chan-mo, a chancellor of the Pyongyang University of Science and Technology, saw a demo of the virtual reality (VR) technology during a recent tour of the complex, NK News said.

"(The lab) looks geared for secondary school students rather than for experts. They said the lab is being used as a virtual laboratory for physics, chemistry, and other experiments," Park was quoted as saying in the article.

The professor said the complex has laboratories for simulation. "I saw only one VR lab and there were many desktop computers."

VR replicates an environment, real or imagined, and simulates a user's physical presence and environment to allow for user interaction. Some advanced haptic systems now include tactile information, generally known as force feedback in medical, gaming and military applications.
