Thousands of North Korea's ruling party cadres have been rewarded with new 45-inch LED (light-emitting diode) TVs as gifts after participating in a rare congress, a South Korean online media outlet reported.

The North's Workers' Party of Korea (WPK) wrapped up its four-day congress on Monday after crowning leader Kim Jong-Il with a new title of "WPK chairmanship", which was once used by his grandfather, Kim Il-Sung, who founded the communist country.

All 3,600 participants in the congress received 45-inch Chinese LED TVs along with a gift box packed with various sweets, snacks and regional delicacies, Daily NK said, citing a source in North Korea.

“The high-end flat screen TVs came with a red flag-shaped label that says 7th Party Congress’in yellow letters, where the TV’s brand name would usually be," the source was quoted as saying.

At the previous congress in 1980, Pyongyang had handed out color TV sets produced by Japanese manufacturer Hitachi, which were very popular, Daily NK said.
