Cannes-bound 'The Wailing' records largest opening weekend in 2016

"The Wailing", a South Korean thriller film by Na Hong-jin recorded the largest opening weekend in Korean box-office of 2016. The thriller movie pulled in 16.8 million US dollars from 1,467 screens nationwide during the second weekend of May.

"Captain America: Civil War" had been the sole dominating film in the Korean box-office since April, but The Wailing's popularity is booming. The 20th Century Fox had announced via Facebook, "We thank the audiences for their love, We have recorded more than two million viewers on our first weekend, becoming the largest hit of May in South Korean film history!"

The film's feverish syndrome took place online. Many online communities and social media are full of talks about The Wailing and some communities urged its users to stop leaking spoilers in forums as to be considerate for those who have not seen the film yet.

The film, also known as "Gokseong", depicts a story of a father who desperately tries to save his daughter from danger, but his endeavors put himself in questions. The film's creator, Na, is infamous for gruesome storylines and stunning screen works. Na's previous works are- "The Chaser" and "The Yellow Sea". Both films have been previously selected to the Cannes Film Festival as an out of competition slot.
