The subsidiary of South Korea's SK Gas Monday opened a new plant run jointly with Saudi Arabian and Kuwait state companies to produce some 600,000 tons of propylene a year mainly for exports to China.

The one-trillion-won (844 million US dollars) project involved investments from SK Advanced, Kuwait's Petrochemical Industries Co. and Saudi Arabia's Advanced Petrochemical Co. to build a propane dehydrogenation (PDH) plant in the southeastern industrial port of Ulsan.

PDH is a process to make propylene by removing hydrogen from propane. SK Advanced plans to export 450,000 tons or 75 percent of propylene produced by its PDH plant every year to China.

"SK Advanced is a successful case of cooperation and investment by South Korea. Saudi Arabia and Kuwait," Joo Hyung-hwan, minister of South Korea's ministry of trade, industry and energy, said in a speech prepared in advance for a ceremony in Ulsan.
